Kalam to Kovind

Kalam to Kovind  Journey of BJP  from Statesmanship  to Pusillanimity             In 2002, NDA under Vajpayee, proposed the name of APJ Abdul Kalam as its Presidential candidate. In 2017, a far stronger NDA under Modi proposes the name of a career politician Ram Nath Kovind for the same post.       The choices & the underlying narrative couldn't be starker. Vajpayee promoting Kalam was primarily a sign of his statesmanship. Of course, the secondary benefit NDA accrued was that Kalam's name evoked immense respect amongst the citizens too for the sheer contribution Kalam had made to India's security. Needless to say, Kalam got spontaneous support from non NDA parties too to become one of India's most admired presidents.      15 years on, NDA which has a massive 49% votes compared to opposition's paltry 35% & 13% non-aligned votes in the electors collegium, choosing Kov...
THE GURMEHAR BINARY https://www.thequint.com/blogs/2017/03/03/gurmehar-kaur-binary-decoded-abvp-saffron-dna-is-the-real-problem-ramjas      Gurmehar Kaur has today become a rallying point. A student of Delhi University, she exercised her right to publicly state her opinions. In response, dozens of Page three gimmicksters and an few ministers jumped into the bandwagon to answer the 20 year old.       If the sinisters are threatening physical violence to her, Mr Minister of home seems to have donned a clairvoyant's robe to diagnose her mental state. In this theatre of the absurd, a few people seem hell bent on twisting the meaning of freedom of speech. It is an absolute right. Period. This fundamental right is guaranteed by the constitution of India. Period. The constitution does not subscribe to threat of violence. Speech and expression are in itself abstract, hence benign occurrences -whereas actions are tangible and the potential to ...

---Independence Day             As we enter the 70 th year of freedom from colonial rule, a few gaping questions remain for “We The People”. We are dutybound to resolve them for our next generations from whom we ha ve borrowed this world.             Compare Japan with India. Both were devastated by the western powers. However 70 years later today, Japan is miles ahead of India in terms of economy, democracy and world stature.             The key differentiator between South Asian countries like India, Bangladesh, Srilanka, Pakistan etc and other developed countries is that in the latter, democratic values in lifestyle has taken root whereas in the former, mere political democratization has occurred.             India, until the 18 th century, ...

Shivratri

2015-16 Budget Blueprint

2015-16 Budget Blueprint  * Govt of India's Economic Survey 2015-16, tabled in the parliament on 26th Feb highlights a glaring anomaly. Hopefully the Union Budget for 2015-16 will mend this aberration.  * It is well known yet never spoken fact that as a nation, India subsidizes the rich to get richer. Our demographical growth stands testament to the fact that the economic growth rate of India's rich is exponentially higher then the growth rate of the poor. * The statistics of the Indian development reflects that 33% of the proletariat have grown at 1% and the elite 33% have grown at 17%. The government proclaims the mean growth rate at approx 8%. Even today 22% of the Indian population subsists on less than $ 2/- daily, which is the internationally accepted norm for extreme poverty. * A farmer while selling his wheat borne out of his own sweat & toil, goes to the procurement agency, weather it is governmental or private and pays tax...

Am I The Only Patriot ?

The recent JNU controversy has engulfed nationwide interest with everyone having a point of view, to the extent that ruffian lumpenism too is being played out at Patiala House court premises. If at all JNU campus was used for anti-national activity, who were its protagonists etc are an issue to be decided by the courts now as the judiciary has been invoked. Since the whole episode was played out in the open, with video evidences galore, the courts will, not before long punish the real perpetrators. If at all seditious activities were taking place in plain view, it is anybody's guess as to the monumental intelligence failure of authorities who let it ripe it under their nose.       The strange thing is that in this melee, jingoists are preaching patriotism. ABVP, as one of central figures in this episode, and its parent organization, the RSS are dictating the debate's agenda. There is a flurry of deba...

Republic Day

Independence Day 2015

---- from perpetual  dependence  to  INDEPENDENCE      What started as the first organized mutiny against a foreign regime in 1857 in Meerut by a sepoy martyr named Mangal Pandey culminated in the Independence of India and Pakistan 90 years, and thousands of sacrifices later on 14/15th August 1947. Those thousands of freedom fighters lay down their lives for a people who would be free to write their own destiny, their own ‘bhagya vidhaataas’ not dependent on anyone. Come 16th August 2011, and a diminutive frail old man poses a benign question to the prevalent regime asking it to release the power it holds over its people by ushering in transparency. Anna’s Anshan and the regime’s Machiavellian response to it galvanized the nation and common men like you and me woke up to the fact that true independence still eluded India. India after over six decades still hadn’t attained the ideal state of people’s participation in governance. It had on...

Death Penalty Debate

The Death Penalty Debate:      This morning a convict was executed after he was given all fair options to exhaust all legal avenues of escaping the gallows till the final minutes. This case was especially widely reported by media in the last few weeks after it became public that the convict was induced to surrender which ought to be considered as mitigating circumstances to his execution. Snuffing out life from any living being is sad, be it of a convict or those hundreds of innocent victims on whom the convict unleashed diabolic violence. Worldwide, more than 90 countries have abolished death penalty; however it is part of the statute in India presently.      If the mitigating circumstances, as disclosed recently by a dead top sleuth are true, then it calls for a serious consideration of plea bargain in Indian jurisprudence. In many other democracies, plea bargain is resorted to secure arrest & conviction of other co-conspirators in li...
